Hailu Theodros Leads Physical Performance Coaching for England Men’s Euro Team

Hailu Theodros has made significant contributions to the physical performance coaching of the England Men’s Senior football team during the UEFA European Championship (Euros) 2024. As a dedicated member of the Debre Tsion St Mary Tewahedo Ethiopian church, Hailu’s journey from his community roots to the international sports stage is inspiring.

Hailu, an alumnus of St Mary’s University, Twickenham (SMU), played a pivotal role in preparing the team physically, guiding their performance, and aiding in their recovery throughout the tournament. His efforts were instrumental in helping the England team reach the Euro finals in July, a remarkable achievement despite their eventual loss to Spain.

Hailu’s academic journey began at SMU, where he completed an undergraduate degree in Sport Rehabilitation. His passion for sports science and athlete development led him to pursue a master’s degree in Strength and Conditioning at the same university. During his studies, Hailu gained valuable experience as the Lead Athletic Development Coach at the Chelsea FC Academy, where he worked with players across all age groups, honing their athletic abilities and preparing them for professional careers.

Hailu’s unique blend of academic knowledge and practical experience has made him a respected figure in the sports industry. His work with the England team during the Euros showcased his ability to apply cutting-edge training techniques and recovery strategies, ensuring the players were in peak physical condition throughout the competition.

Associate Professor Michael Ayres, from the School of Sport, Exercise, and Applied Sciences at St Mary’s University, spoke highly of Hailu’s dedication and achievements: “Hailu was an outstanding student during his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at St Mary’s. He managed to balance his academic commitments with his practical work in the football industry, approaching both with humility and diligence. It has been a privilege to observe his progress, and we are excited to see him play a crucial role in the England team’s quest for European glory.”

Hailu’s journey from a university student to a key figure in international football highlights the importance of dedication, continuous learning, and passion for one’s field. His story serves as an inspiration for aspiring sports professionals, demonstrating that with the right blend of education and practical experience, significant contributions can be made to the world of sports.
